History: I wish I could link this, truly. The Wiki has a brief summary of his life up through the beginning of the story of the game. Unfortunately, no one really cares about Mahoyaku enough to make summaries of anything else, so I'm going run down his participation in Main Story and omit most of the event stories, as they're not all plot relevant.
In Main Story 1, Chloe and his mentor, Rustica, are summoned as chosen Sage's Wizards--meaning they're going to have to fight the big EVIL Great Catastrophe aka the freakin' moon. They arrive at the Sage's manor/magical HQ via the magical elevator, where they're soon met with other wizards recently chosen to be Sage's wizards, replacing those who tuned to stone (died) in the annual fight just a few days prior. He's timid to a degree, but his extrovert energy soon jumps out as he meets other wizards around his own age. Fussing about Rustica is his primary concern at first, but when the wizards are invited to Central Country for a celebration of their selection, Chloe is tasked with making beautiful matching outfits for every single Sage's wizard. Unfortunately, several more willful members of the Sage's wizards refuse to participate in the ceremonies, causing distrust with the royalty and military of Central Country. This culminates in the appearance of the errant wizards at Central wizard Oz's behest, and near-death of one of the Central Knights, Nicholas. In the aftermath of Nicholas' fall from a balcony, Chloe finds himself torn between wanting to make friends, and finding that many in the aristocracy no longer want to associate with wizards. His sensitive nature leads him to be anguished over the sudden hatred, a complete turn from the celebratory atmosphere prior.
Soon, investigating odd occurrences around Central Country at Prince Vincent's request, Chloe and the other 3 Western wizards--Rustica, Shylock, and Murr--go to a mysterious manor where they're confronted by a shattered fragment of Murr's soul, and what appears to be the remnants of a summoning ritual. Eventually, they subdue the angered spirits at the manor, and return to the other wizards' side. Chloe tends to take a back-line role in this story, as he is younger, less experienced, and less powerful than several of the others. He acts as support in what capacities he can as the Sage's wizards face down an enormous shadow bird and the evil, mysterious magician Nova. Nova is sealed in a volcano by the Northern wizards, and everyone finally gets to wear Chloe's beautiful outfit creations to celebrate the rebuilding of Central Country after both the fight with the Catastrophe and Nova.
In the intervening events, Chloe often makes outfits for the other wizards and the Sage, and joins his fellow Sage's wizards on various missions to quiet the riled-up spirits of the world that were disturbed by the recent coming of the Catastrophe. He also trains under the tutelage of the other Western wizards to improve his powers, finding greater and greater success in the VERY Western tradition of concealment and transformation magic.
In Main Story 1.5, Chloe finds himself at Rustica's side as the Sage's wizards face a mysterious force in the form of several witches who bar entry to Central Country's Granvelle Castle. He mostly takes on a support role in this story; it's Rustica's kindness and immense power that defeats one of the witches, in Chloe's absence.
In Main Story 2, Chloe and the other Sage's wizards travel to Western Country at the invitation of the Western royalty, who ultimately want to move the Magic Headquarters from its current location in Central Country to Western Country. Chloe's place in this story is more prominent, being that his mentor, Rustica, is one of the major characters of this arc. When the Western wizards encounter an eccentric wizard in a botanical garden, Chloe is shocked to see that it's someone he knows, for the wizard once knew Rustica as well. Through their encounter, Chloe reveals to the Sage that the long-lost bride Rustica has been searching for is actually long dead, and that Rustica killed her. Rustica, separated and hidden away from the other wizards, loses control of his magic and begins to continually dissolve into white feathers. When he is reunited with Chloe, it's all Chloe can do to keep himself and Rustica together. Eventually, Chloe realizes that the solution to Rustica's magic going berserk is giving him an emotional outlet. He embraces Rustica and encourages him to cry, and through Chloe's gentle kindness, Rustica is saved. The wizards return to the HQ after defeating a miasma-spewing monster, only to be swiftly attacked by Nova and his automaton creations...
Personality answers:
1) Who in your character's canon influenced the most growth in your character? What do they think about this character?
- Without a doubt, Rustica! Rustica lifted Chloe up out of his abusive home and taught him magic, music, how to read, how to write, how to take care of others (okay, he figured that one out by necessity), and the infinite power of kindness. Since Chloe's education and upbringing were incredibly neglectful, Rustica had to teach him how to live in society, as well as how to do things some might consider very basic. By being Chloe's first real exposure to the outside world, Rustica basically formed much of Chloe's sense of self and identity beyond the abuse he suffered. With Rustica's amnesia, Chloe also had to be a bit of a "parent" for Rustica, learning to make sure he took care of himself and didn't forget literally every small thing. Chloe makes Rustica the center of his daily activities, waking him up in the mornings and always preparing him tea. Rustica is his most important person, the one he is fated to be beside. He would do literally anything for Rustica, though he fears losing him more than anything else as a result of this. To him, Rustica is as beloved as family, or a lover, though identifying his feelings can be complicated for him. He sacrificed his own comfort--albeit with much soul-searching--for Rustica in Main Story 2. There's a distinct feeling of possessiveness over Rustica from Chloe (and obsessive love and single-minded affection are common among Western wizards), which Rustica returns in his own special way. They're normal, your honor, I swear.
2) What does your character think about physical appearances? Are they the sort to meticulously primp themselves, or could they not care less?
- Chloe might be the cutest thing in the entirety of any fandom or creative project, but he literally thinks he's ugly and stupid (because his family sucked). This means, ultimately, that he learned (via rich noble Rustica) to take great pride in improving his appearance, dressing to the nines and always looking tip-top. As Rustica was a noble in Western Country, Chloe as his disciple had a certain standard to aspire and adhere to. More than that, though, as he has always had sewing as his comfort, creating beautiful things and beautifying himself is a comforting activity. Creating beautiful things for others is always his priority, but he does so love makeup and doing his nails, as well as sewing and creating accessories for himself. He really doesn't mind what other people look like, though he's quick to clock someone as beautiful or ugly (or anything in between or beyond). He wouldn't put down someone else's appearance, instead pitying them and/or wanting to beautify them if he deems them less than perfect. It's in a harmless sort of way, as he'd never force someone to change their appearance if they didn't want to. As for the looks of others, dressing them up in ways that accentuate their assets is a point of pride for Chloe, who likes to make the fearsome types sexy and the cute types even cuter. He can create any image he wants to with his sewing skills, though he doesn't always have confidence in his creations before they're totally out there for the world to see.
3) What is your character most afraid of?
- Chloe is undoubtedly most afraid of losing Rustica, but this is part of a larger abandonment issue and his perpetual struggle with loneliness and feeling unlikable. Losing Rustica would be tantamount to losing the first person who ever loved him and was kind to him, so it's understandable that it's a fear. Western wizards are prone to obsession, especially in affection, interest, and love, so it runs into an almost unhealthy amount of devotion and care. He can spend time away from Rustica, but the concept of Rustica permanently not existing in his life might give Chloe the breakdown of all time. However, he fears losing all friends, especially ones he gives gifts to and feels he has bonded with. The thought of people thinking ill enough of him to end a friendship sends him spiraling multiple times in canon, and while he tries to play it off, it's clear that he's desperately hurt by perceived abandonment. This, of course, stems from his difficult childhood, where his family and sisters were constantly hateful to him, leaving him always isolated and lonely. When he was lifted out of this, it's understandable that he would cling to the positive feelings of being wanted, and belonging with other wizards. It's unfortunately a very realistic fear that he could lose Rustica (to the machinations of the Western royalty and their allies), other Sage's wizards (to the Catastrophe), or any friends he makes (due to the sad state of human-wizard relations in most of the world).
4) What would your character say is their best trait? What is truly their best trait?
- Chloe thinks his best trait is his sewing and what he can give to others materially or via service. His self-worth is rooted in usefulness and belonging to an extreme degree, despite many years of simply existing at Rustica's side as a bit of a nomad. He values the way he takes care of others, the things he can make for them, and their positive reactions fuel him. However, arguably, his actual best trait is his kindness. He's quick to try to make friends, to offer of himself, and to do things for people without question. He's even friends with some of the Northern wizards, often thought to be too scary to really get close to. His kindness is disarming, charming, and a great asset in his quest to surround himself with love. His capacity for love and wonder for life go hand in hand with this, making him eager to learn both magical skills and the hearts of others. While sometimes he comes across as naive because of his kindness and the ease with which he gives of himself, he is wounded easily, and often gives far more to others than he takes for himself. He's a lover of animals and children, a friend to wonder and whimsy, and he lives for the smiles and praises of everyone, whether directed at him or at someone he loves. This kind of desperation for love might be seen as too needy, or a negative trait at the extremes, but it often brings Chloe new experiences, dear friends, heartwarming (and breaking) moments, and fresh, wondrous experiences everywhere he goes.
Inventory:
1) His magical tool, which is a sewing box. This is a magical item tied to his soul, essentially, and it can be summoned and dismissed at will. It is not fully necessary to use his magic, but it helps him focus his power. He can also use the stuff in it... just to sew.
2) His magical amulet, a bottle of star nail polish. In canon, this helps to restore or recharge his magic when he is away from his Mana Area, i.e. the place where he feels most comfortable and can most effectively rest.
3) A mended handkerchief embroidered with a bluebird and other designs.
4) His broom. It can be summoned or dismissed at will in canon. It flies. Standard stuff. If this counts as a vehicle or mount, I will instead give him a small pink jar to hold sugar.
Powers/Abilities: Magic! Chloe is a wizard, and he can use several kinds of magic. However, compared to a lot of wizards he knows, he's not very powerful. Wizards at Chloe's power level have to use a magic phrase to invoke their magic. He can do a number of things, including very basic healing of wounds, cast basic blessings to protect health and bring happiness, make magical sugar (which has restorative/minor healing properties), make light (like a small light or small fireworks), multiply items in small quantities, enhance his senses slightly, and the equivalent of telekinesis (which he generally uses to sew). There are undoubtedly other spells he can perform that we just haven't seen specifically described in detail in stories, so basic elemental/nature magic is almost definite. He can also summon his broom and fly on it!
Western Wizards are usually skilled at transformation magic (transforming themselves and others, specifically) and mimicry, but Chloe's specific magical talent is actually in creating, that is, transforming and manipulating objects! He primarily uses this to transform fabric and other items into beautiful, magically sewn clothing and items. His other special magical ability is that he can induce a state of temporary death in people. It's never used for ill (I promise). He mostly uses it to hold them still while dressing and fitting.
He can also sew by hand, make basic armor and accessories, and makes heckin' good tea. He's better at adulting than a lot of the older wizards, which I think deserves some recognition. He can ALSO play several musical instruments (including bells/handbells, trumpet, and probably somewhat piano and/or harpsichord), compliments of his mentor, Rustica.
As a note, wizards cannot break promises, or they will lose their magic. If this needs to be altered or nerfed, go for it.
His magical items are described above in the inventory. I am fully prepared for his magic and items to be nerfed and/or supplanted by native magic!
Samples: Here & Here
Player Goals: I just think he'd get along with the native folks a bit, as he's from the slums and VERY kind and open-minded, eager to assist, and a people pleaser. I'd like him as a slightly less plot-involved character than Yuki. Yuki is kinda necessarily in the thick of everything because of Momo. Chloe is much more of a social character and a support type. I think he'll fill some gaps by creating custom apparel for the Augmented as well. If he ends up with 52 imprints, don't worry about it. (He's REALLY cute, I promise!)
Soul Choice: Aves! I have my reasons. This shouldn't make him TOO upset... He's been a bird before, after all. Specifically, he'll be inspired by a bluebird, with the crown plumage of a strawberry finch.
